 Saddle Links

Welcome . . . . .
Breeding pigeons for many years I have tried numerous variety's, but the homer pigeon be it racing or show type have always been a favorite. In the eighties I raced with club and combines and maintained a breeding operation of over two hundred birds. In the late nineties I tried to breed competitive saddle marked homers for the the money races. This was a disappointing venture even though I had some reasonable success. The best racers were always the mis-marked birds and being some what of a perfectionist . . .  I couldn't stand having such a beautiful bird in the loft, but not having correct and clean markings for the breed. In total frustration with the project I sold all my saddle marked birds and concentrated on the more traditional colored racers.

In 2007 my interest in the saddle homer became sparked again with the discovery of the Saddle Homer USA club and it's NPA approved breeding standard for the Saddle Homer Breed. The Saddle homers could now have their own class at the shows and compete at the National Level for points and awards. I decided to bring in a few select birds to start my saddle project and went after the basic colors for my foundation stock. The first bird to arrive was "Sir Charles"AU 03 CHI 4288 BLACK SADDLE COCK. This cock is slightly mis-marked on the right side of his head, but carry's good color and feather quality. Note: Sent "Sir Charles" to Richard Wiggans of Arkansas. Richard was wanting some blacks so I thought "Sir Charles" could help his program.

The second bird to arrive was the "Corona Hen" 06 AU 26645 BB Hen. The Corona is well marked, but has colored feathering in the vent area. She is a medium size bird with a good station or stance and a nice round head. The Corona will be mated to Sir Charles.

My third bird to enter the breeding stable is "The Jockey Cock"  AU 06 ARPU 83455 a very nice red saddle with good breast muscle, round head and a proud carriage. These are the three things I like to see in a breeder and I will mate him to several different hens.

I will add a photo GALLERY SECTION to this site in the future and share a few pictures from around the loft of breeders and their young as they become available. I am breeding to the Standard, but still like to slip a little race bred blood in the line from time to time.

The "Tin Man" is the future for my saddle homers and is an outstanding blue bar cock with plenty of muscle, bold neck and nice round head. All hens will be mated to The Tin Man.

A note about the website theme: I have always been a race horse enthusiast and a former owner of Thoroughbred & Quarter horses which I ran in Oklahoma, New Mexico and California. I still manage to get to the races in Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana several times a year and will probably own another one someday. I decided to incorporate my race horse experiences with this new saddle project. The birds will have names from horses I once owned (or wish I had) and some will have race track lingo. Hope you enjoy the site and will visit often.
